Local and specialist services

We provide both inpatient care and treatment in the community in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow. We also provide a child and adolescent mental health service for the London Borough of Brent.

Inpatient wards

Our inpatient wards support both patients who have been detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, and informal patients who agree to a stay in hospital. Our inpatient wards are located in three main areas:

  • The Wolsey wing (including the Jubilee ward) at St Bernard’s Hospital in Ealing
  • Hammersmith & Fulham Mental Health Unit
  • Lakeside Mental Health Unit in Isleworth, Hounslow.

Psychiatric intensive care is provided at the Askew PICU in our Hammersmith & Fulham Mental Health Unit. This centralised service provides care for patients from all three of our local London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

Community services

Assessment service
Assessment teams provide specialist mental health assessments for adults (18 and over) who have been referred by their GP.There are three assessments teams, based at:

  • Cherington House, Ealing
  • The Claybrook Centre, Hammersmith
  • Lakeside Mental Health Unit, Isleworth, Hounslow.

Recovery teams

Recovery teams provide support for adults with severe and enduring mental health problems who require more intensive support to recover and remain well in the community.

Our recovery teams are based at:

  • Avenue House, Acton
  • The Limes in Ealing
  • The Claybrook Centre, Hammersmith
  • Old Oak Road in Hammersmith
  • Lakeside Mental Health Unit, Isleworth, Hounslow.
  • The Cardinal Centre in Hounslow.

Early intervention in psychosis
Early intervention services (EIS) provide specialist support for people experiencing psychosis for the first time. Working with people aged 18-35, they focus on the early detection and assessment of psychotic symptoms, and then provide help and support to treat the underlying causes.

Crisis resolution home treatment (CRHT)
Crisis resolution teams offer home treatment to people in a mental health crisis who would otherwise need to be admitted to hospital. Their main job is to help people to remain in the community and avoid unnecessary hospital stays through fast, home-focused assessment, support and short-term treatment.

Cognitive impairment and dementia services
The cognitive impairment and dementia services (CIDS) provide assessment and treatment for people over 18 who experience problems with their mental abilities, such as thinking, knowing and remembering.

Eating disorders
The eating disorder service is a community outpatient assessment and treatment service for people of 18 years and over with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia or binge eating disorder.

Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)
Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) provide a comprehensive range of services to children and young people who are experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties or mental health problems. The service has its own dedicated website (www.westlondoncamhs.nhs.uk), developed in collaboration with young service users, with information for young children, adolescents, parents and professionals.

Liaison psychiatry
Through our liaison psychiatry services we provide care to people who are inpatients or visitors to the urgent care centres or emergency departments at acute hospitals in Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

The consultant-led teams consist of mental health professionals who have specific expertise in helping people who harm themselves or who have mental health problems (including dementia) which can cause complications for their physical healthcare or treatment in the general hospital.

In a hybrid arrangement with the crisis resolution and home treatment teams, cover for the hospitals is provided 24/7/365. The services offer care to all patients aged 16 and over (including those over 65) irrespective of postcode. 

The services offers assessment and treatment, and arrange follow-up care if necessary. They also give advice to GPs about the interaction between mental and physical health as part of the North West London Integrated Care Programme.

Primary care mental health services
The primary care mental health service (sometimes called Primary Care Plus) is a service for people experiencing mental health problems who might benefit from extra support over and above what is available from their GP.

It also supports people who are being discharged from secondary care mental health services, such as a community mental health team and helps to prevent the need for referral to secondary care.

Primary care mental health workers are based out of health centres and GP surgeries across Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow where they also provide training and advice to the primary care staff to help them better manage mental health conditions themselves.

Improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT)
The IAPT (improving access to psychological services) offer support for common mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and panic. It is available to anybody over the age of 18 registered with a GP in Ealing, Hounslow, or Hammersmith & Fulham. People can refer themselves without informing their GP.

Stop smoking services (Smokefree Ealing)
Smokefree Ealing offers a free six-week programme, along with stop-smoking medications on prescription and advice, support and encouragement to help people quit for good.

We have launched a new campaign to help local people live longer, healthier lives. One You Ealing runs a stop smoking service, offers health checks and free healthy lifestyle programmes for children and families to help tackle childhood obesity.

Our child and adolescent service has a dedicated website www.westlondoncamhs.nhs.uk developed in partnership with young people.


Home ward
Our new community service - Home ward helps people during a period of severe or sudden illness, or when they have been discharged from a general hospital, so they can recover and remain well at home. Six months on the service has reduced the average hospital stay from weeks to 5 days.
